Our Program

At Leaf School we engage students in curricula that allows for deep exploration of a variety of topics.  In literacy, comprehension, phonics, grammar, and writing are presented as an interwoven process through literature, rather than individual skills that are to be mastered.  Students are offered the skills to independently choose texts that are of their interest and at their level. They are also given flexibility to present their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs through writing in a variety of formats.  Math skills are taught and connected to real world scenarios with a focus on building mental math strategies.  Through project based learning, students work together and independently to hone their math knowledge in order to design, build, and budget!  Scientists are born as students learn about constructing scientific arguments using evidence and research.  Throughout each unit, students investigate a question or problem by conducting experiments, reading and interpreting data and analyzing scientific texts.  In social studies, we cover a variety of time periods and events in California and then expand to the country and world.  Students study various perspectives and points of views to gather a full understanding of our state and nation’s past.
